Interview with Remy Morimoto Park

The first time we scrolled over Remy's Instagram we knew at that moment we would like to get to know her better. Her raw, natural beauty, beautiful feed and unicorn-inspired smoothie bowls got our attention right away. She is so creative with her colorful food creations and her cute yoga outfits urge us to exercise more :)

Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

"My name is Remy and I've been vegan for about 4 years now. I'm originally from New York but have lived overseas for most of my life, in a few different countries in Asia. I am a vegan and gluten free recipe developer and wellness blogger. On the side, I'm also a yoga teacher, aromatherapist and mindfulness coach. I have a huuuuge sweet tooth and love cats!"

How did you go vegan and what would you recommend to those who are trying to transition to this lifestyle?

"I actually went vegan because I was experiencing what I thought were dairy intolerance symptoms, so I removed it from my diet and a lot of the recipes I looked up online happened to be vegan. Out of curiosity, I decided to go fully vegan for a week and that week turned into... 4 years I guess! Although I did not go vegan to heal my eating disorder, I actually found a lot of success in eating disorder recovery after finding a diet that made me feel good about food, eating, and the positive impact that my choice had on the lives on animals and the environment. "

What’s your all-time favorite vegan recipe that you could share with us?

"My favourite sweet recipe is probably a Maple Tahini Cookie recipe that I make for friends so often!
My go to salad is a Kale "Caesar" Salad with crispy chickpeas, but I always love a good Mac and Cheeze too. "

We know you have lived in many countries and you have a passion for travel. What is your favorite place to travel to?

"My favourite places in the world are New York, LA and Thailand. My ideal place to live is fast paced like New York, but I love visiting LA and Thailand for sun, ocean and really fresh produce (and great vegan options)! I really love places that are more remote, close to the ocean and where shoes are optional, but there's no place like New York to live. "

How do you prepare yourself for a long trip?

"I always like to do my research beforehand when it comes to vegan options. I like to try and understand how accessible veganism is wherever I'm traveling to, and try to familiarize myself with some of the local vegan restaurants. Fortunately, vegan food is really easy and available pretty much anywhere because it's just plants!
I do like to travel with snacks however, just in case. I also like to bring my essentials with me like a reusable water bottle, utensils, straws and I always travel with a grocery tote of some kind. My biggest tip for traveling and maintaining good health is to stay hydrated, and stick to eating a majority of veggies. Even if you're in Paris and enjoying some amazing vegan croissants, make sure you keep your veggie intake high too!"

What are the necessities you have to take with you on a trip?

"I like to travel with protein powder, because it's an easy way to make sure you're getting protein in if you happen to be in a place where vegan food ends up being bread and fruit. I always bring a reusable water bottle, my B12, all my cameras, and snacks! I've gotten better about this, but I used to travel with half my suitcase being food-related."

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would that be and why?

"I've had Sweden on my list for a long time because I love how ahead of the curve they always seem to be when it comes to veganism, progressive thought, sustainability and design. I hear it's a great place to visit as a vegan, but I'm also fascinated by their culture and art. It's also my dream to go back to Iceland to see an aurora, because the last time I went I unfortunately didn't catch one."

What is your favorite way to pamper yourself?

"Taking time to sleep in is my absolute favourite way to pamper myself. Although I'm self employed, social media doesn't sleep, and I tend to have a very hard time turning off, or taking time off work (even weekends!). It's easy to forget to take time off when your job is something you really enjoy, so I think that is a big part of it, but too often, I sacrifice sleep.
I also love baths and taking trips to remote areas and just disconnecting from my phone."

Do you have a motto you live by?

"Eat veggies & travel often! In general, I also just like to try and live compassionately in all aspects of life."

What’s your fashion style?

"If I'm being totally honest, I spend most of my time in athletic wear and yoga clothing because I'm constantly in and out of classes, and very active. When I do dress up however, I love neutral tones, pastel colours, and lots of white, but if I ever have issues figuring out what to wear, an all black ensemble is always appropriate in New York. Recently, my go to combo has been a crop top + palazzo/culotte style pants."

What is your opinion on sustainable fashion?

"I had a very difficult time initially, when I made the decision to be conscious in my fashion choices. It was already difficult having gone vegan, looking our for sneaky materials like suede, leather linings, zipper linings, silk, wool, etc. and I found that some vegan fashion was really just plastic. For example vegan leather is typically made with just plastic, which is great because it's cruelty free, but on the other hand, not so environmentally friendly. When I looked into sustainable fashion, I found that a lot of it was upcycled leather, sustainable wool, or silk, but this didn't sit well with me as a vegan. Honestly, I try and find a happy medium between vegan and sustainable fashion. The ultimate goal is a completely vegan and sustainable wardrobe, but it is definitely becoming easier to achieve that with the rise of conscious brands. My attitude towards it is always do your best, and one recent trick that has helped me is thrifting or purchasing from re-selling sites like Poshmark for example."
